Langer Eugen: World's first building with natural orientation?                                     mapplet

The Langer Eugen in Bonn will possibly be world's first building with natural orientation according to the Munich Orientation Convention, an idea from a Munichian inventor to simplify and harmonize all orientation means worldwide: signage, cartography, postal codes, navigation devices and verbal expressions.

Within this building, orientation just requires easy brain work, that means: you can find targets

- without maps, - without names,
- without illogical numbers  - without arrows
- without floor marks  - without square grids
- without colors - without compass or other navigation devices

Rooms, doorways, lifts, escalators, emergency stairs, defibrillators, parking places, fire extinguishers etc. have logical addresses like

             security entrance                      m1           ( or  m1 r40)

             conference room                m10 e19     ( or  m10 r20 e19)

             WC                                   m1:3  r22

             fire extinguisher                  m5:3  r33 e19

which are easy to understand if you associate the building with a clock according to the following convention:

Around a central point, the horizon is divided in 12 "horizon hours" called

          m1   to   m12

, whereas m12 points to north. This divides building and ground into 12 m-sectors

This also facilitates the orientation through loudspeakers or mobile phones on emergency cases:

"bomb alarm, avoid the sectors m6 and m7"

(finding of cardinal points indoor: see chapter 2 - signage below)

Horizon hours are divided in horizon minutes either

- as an ordinal number

- or as a DISTANCE to the horizon hour

The convention for horizon minutes is:

     the greater, the later

Example:    window m8:5

( read    "emm 8 point 5"   or     "emm 8 five" )

Considering the distance to m0 - the radius-, logical position codes come into existence, for example

                 WC StatusQuo©   m1:3 r22

StatusQuo means "where you are". In other words:

"r" comes from radius and is a numbering starting FROM m0

   "m" is a north-direction-based numbering AROUND m0

and this simple methode covers a gigantic market gap:

   l o g i c a l   and easily understandable  position codes.

2 - Signage:

Such logical addresses will be integrated within door signs on shown on so-called Orientator©, also within the lifts:

                 Orientator©

The 3rd. code "e"  derives from elevation and defines the floor over ground. Floors under ground will have an "u" as identifier.

Vertical Pointing©:

additional to the logical position information, a round symbol called center pointer will be placed on the periphery of the sign. This allows to detect the direction of building's pole according to the following conventions:

if the pointer is placed on top (f12) m0 will be in front of you (f12)
on bottom (f6)   behind you (f6)
right hand (f3)   right hand (f3)

Acc. to the same convention, a square symbol points to north = m12. The picture left hand reveils: the pole is behind  (f6) and m12 is right hand (f2).

Remark: there are two emergency exits (f3 and f7). Today, only one option is indicated. What is to do if the danger comes from the one indicated option?

3 - Navigation / VolksNav©:

The local navigation with the help of such codes is called VolksNav©. As used today with house numbers, VolksNav© is nothing else than the major/minor comparison between "r" and "m" values:

Simply proceed according to 1 -2 -3 :

1

Positioning

Turn your body until m0 will be BEHIND. In this position,

ahead will be outwards
right hand " to later (clockwise)
left hand " to earlier

etc.

Beginners have to turn physically, after some exercises anyone will be able to do this by his power of imagination. In case you look at above shown Orientator©, you'd have to turn to left, correct?

2

r-comparison

Ask yourself:

do I have to move inwards or outwards?

( = is the target radius greater or smaller than the actual one?)

3

m-comparison

Ask yourself:

do I have to move to “later” (clockwise) or to earlier?

( = is the target m later or earlier than the actual one?)

Let's see an example, basing on the orientator© shown above:

If your target is:    parking place           m1:3 r22

and you're in front of the Orientator©     m4 r44 ,

so you'll have to go

- inwards ( r22 is less than r44 )

and

- to "earlier" (counterclockwise)   ( m1 is "earlier"  than m4 )

This may seem unfamiliar, but the orientation based on cardinal points is used for some thousand years and imaginary clocks are used by soldiers, boy scouts, pilots, blind people etc. for more than 100 years. In a real situation, VolksNav© can be learned within few minutes, that means, faster than the most seeking times.

Emergency cases: people who VolksNavigate©, are smarter. It will be possible to guide them by mobile phone, loudspeaker.etc. (orientation esperanto), thereby less panic than today will arise.

Blind guide: the orientators© can also be optimized for blind people. The pointers are already tangible, the position codes will be signed with Braille.

4 - Urban address

Acording to www.volksnav.com/Bonn, and www.tinyURL.com/BonnMapplet  the logical urban address of the Langer Eugen is::

            StatusQuo© Bonn m0

Such codes harmonize with codes for crossings, stations, stop points, bridges etc.

5 - Vision:

Mobile applications: Very soon also navigation devices and mobile phones will indicate such logical position codes and cardinal points , see www.volksnav.com/mobile

You're invited to test the program for pocketPC/smartphone with/without GPS by means of a download from www.volksnav.com

Natural World Co-ordinates: the same addressing methode will soon also be used within the whole globe, see  www.watchrose.com.   and www.tinyURL.com/UNmapplet.    Acc. to this, the logical position code of Bonn will be

                                                               WatchRose© m1:18 20   r60 65

Comparing this code with airport Köln/Bonn WatchRose© m1:18 05   r60 65, it is possible to detect that the distance Bonn/airport is 15 km "counterclock"
